Recent reports of foodborne illness, including the current Cyclospora outbreak, are a reminder that food safety is important every day. The good news is that a few simple habits can help lower your risk and make preparing meals safer for you and your family.
Food safety starts with clean hands. Wash your hands with soap and water before you prepare food and after handling raw meat, poultry, seafood, or eggs. It is also important to clean countertops, cutting boards, knives, and other kitchen tools before and after cooking.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet. Rinsing them under running water before eating, cutting, or cooking can help remove dirt and reduce germs on the surface. When cooking, keep raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs away from foods that are ready to eat. Use separate cutting boards when possible or wash them well between uses. Cook foods all the way through to kill harmful germs.
Storing food properly is another important step. Put leftovers in the refrigerator within two hours of cooking or serving. Thaw frozen foods in the refrigerator, cold water, or the microwave instead of leaving them on the kitchen counter.
Food recalls and health alerts do happen from time to time, but they should not stop you from eating fresh fruits and vegetables. Instead, they remind us to stay informed and follow safe food handling habits. If a food recall is announced, follow the instructions from public health officials.
Most foodborne illnesses can be prevented by practicing safe food habits every day. Healthy eating and food safety go hand in hand. By washing your hands, rinsing fresh produce, cooking food safely, and storing it the right way, you can help protect yourself and your family while enjoying healthy meals with confidence.
