Movember Is Here!

Join in the Movement to Bring Awareness to Men’s Health

Take a look around and if you gather that in the streets there seem to be an exceptionally large number of mustachioed gentlemen romping about town, chances are it’s Movember.

It’s Movember

“What on earth?”, you ask.

Yes. You heard it right. MO-vember: that special time of year between October and December when otherwise well-kept men step their personal grooming up to the next level by abstaining from shaving above the lip for 30 days and 30 nights.

“What, pray tell (you may wonder) could be the inspiration behind such tonsorial hijinks?”

The answer is simple. Movember—a portmanteau of the diminutive term “mo” for mustache and the month of “November”—is an annual charitable campaign used to promote the awareness of men’s health issues by having men grow their mustaches uninhibitedly for the entire four weeks and two days of November.

Following the pink ribbons of October for breast cancer awareness, Movember places particular emphasis on awareness for men’s behavioral health, testicular cancer, and prostate cancer—often pairing the mustache motif with the light blue ribbon used for prostate cancer awareness. The movement was started in Australia and New Zealand in 2004 by the Movember Foundation with the goal of reducing preventable deaths by increasing early detection, diagnosis, and effective treatments of these diseases.

While men especially support this cause by growing out their ‘staches’ in a collective gesture of light-hearted fun, everyone from women to children to animals can be found joining in on the action with faux and paper mustachios flooding the pages of social media in #movember posts seen across the board during the month.
