Preventing Injuries

Some may feel that going to the gym is a thing of the past. Considering the last year and a half, who can blame them! While it’s obviously important to maintain our ability to keep each other safe, it’s also important to kick the rocks on the sedentary lifestyles that we’ve taken up to remain safe during this pandemic. It's no wonder why by the end of January 2021, Bloomberg reported that not only are people returning back to the gym, they’re also including virtual programs from home, signaling people are ready to get back to their workout routines, regardless of where they are at.

Whether you’re into the slow methodical movements of Yoga or Pilates, the fast-paced intensity of CrossFit, or long distance running, there’s one thing we can all agree on, none of us want to get injured. Nothing takes the wind out of our sails faster than an injury; An injury can linger for weeks, months, and even years if we really hurt ourselves, literally putting us on the sidelines until we’ve recovered...and who wants to be on the sidelines?

In order to avoid these dreaded injuries, we suggest two easy steps. First and foremost. DON'T RUSH IT! We know you want to feel good and look good, but rushing this may end up being a huge barrier to your overall fitness goals. Take the time to slowly reintegrate yourself into your routines. Afterall, even people paid handsomely like athletes get hurt when they rush it, and despite how we may feel about our own abilities… We’re likely NOT professional athletes.   Take a look at this research study done on the spike in injury statistics in the Bundesliga, which was the first major, professional sports league to return to play since the pandemic. The soccer teams were said to have rushed back, without enough time to get their bodies back into “game shape.”

Secondly, make sure you WARM UP and STRETCH.  Stretching before exercise allows your muscles to loosen up and become resistant to the impact they undergo during workouts, and this reduces the chance of injury.

So, don't jump back in head first like you’re at the top of your game. Make sure you take the time and warm your body up and stretch your body out… Then, GO CATCH A GAZELLE.
