Growing up in a military family can be a special experience. [Military children](https://militarychild.org/resource/wellbeing-toolkit/?) may live in different places, meet new people, and learn about different cultures. These experiences can teach children how to adjust to change and become more independent. However, military life can also be hard. Moving often, changing schools, and having a parent leave for training or deployment can cause stress.

Mental wellness is an important part of a child’s health. It includes how children understand their feelings, deal with stress, and handle problems. Good mental wellness can help military children feel more confident when they face changes in their lives.

Families can help by keeping a regular routine when possible. Having set times for meals, homework, activities, and sleep can help children feel safe and calm. A routine can be very helpful during a [move](https://www.militaryonesource.mil/moving-pcs/plan-to-move/making-the-move-easier-for-military-kids/?) or while a parent is away. It is also important for children to stay in touch with family and friends. Phone calls, video chats, letters, and messages can help them feel close to the people they care about.

Being active is another good way to deal with stress. Children can play sports, ride a bike, take a walk, or play outside. Exercise can help improve their mood and help them relax. Fun activities like drawing, writing, playing music, or making crafts can also help children share their feelings in a healthy way.

Children should know that it is okay to talk about how they feel. Parents and caregivers can help by [listening and showing that they care.](https://www.militaryonesource.mil/health-wellness/mental-health/confidential-counseling-for-youth-teens/?) Military children may feel sad, worried, angry, or nervous when big changes happen. Talking with a parent, teacher, counselor, or another trusted adult can help them work through these feelings.

Military children may face challenges that other children do not. Strong family support, healthy routines, exercise, and open talks can make these challenges easier. Taking care of mental wellness can help kids in military families learn healthy ways to deal with stress and change. These skills can help them now and as they grow older.
