Aging experts found that the impact of chronic loneliness and social isolation can be as harmful as [smoking 15 cigarettes a day](https://www.hrsa.gov/enews/past-issues/2019/january-17/loneliness-epidemic) and deem it a public health epidemic. According to the [National Institute on Aging](https://www.nia.nih.gov/news/social-isolation-loneliness-older-people-pose-health-risks#:~:text=About%2028%20percent%20of%20older,not%20lonely%20or%20socially%20isolated.), loneliness and social isolation increase the risk of mental health conditions like depression and cognitive impairment, and physical conditions like high blood pressure and heart disease.
