Every November, you might notice more men growing mustaches and it’s not just for fun. Movember is a movement that encourages men to focus on their health, both mental and physical. It’s a time to start good habits that could literally save your life.
Here are seven simple but powerful habits you can start this Movember to take better care of yourself and inspire other men to do the same.
1. Get Regular Checkups
When was your last doctor’s visit? Many men skip routine checkups, but these visits are the best way to catch problems early, like high blood pressure, diabetes, or cancer. Make it a goal to see your doctor once a year, even if you feel fine.
2. Move Your Body Every Day
You don’t have to be at the gym every day. Just 30 minutes of activity a day, walking, biking, swimming, or even yard work, can strengthen your heart, boost your mood, and keep your weight in check. The key is consistency.
3. Eat More Whole Foods
Try to eat fewer processed foods and more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Think of food as fuel for your body, the better the fuel, the better you’ll feel. Small swaps, like choosing water instead of soda, make a big difference over time.
4. Check In on Your Mental Health
Men are often told to “tough it out,” but mental health matters just as much as physical health. Talk to someone if you’re stressed, anxious, or down, a friend, a family member, or a counselor. Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
5. Get Enough Sleep
Sleep isn’t lazy, but it’s necessary. Adults need 7 to 9 hours a night to think clearly, manage stress, and stay healthy. Try setting a bedtime and avoiding screens before you sleep.
Movember isn’t just about mustaches, but it’s about starting conversations and saving lives. Whether it’s scheduling a checkup, going for a run, or opening up about how you’re feeling, every step counts.
This November, let’s challenge each other to take men’s health seriously, because the best time to take care of yourself is right now.
During Movember, US Family Health Plan (USFHP) supports men’s health by promoting access to preventive care and regular checkups through its network of trusted providers. The plan encourages members to discuss important topics like prostate cancer screenings, mental health, and lifestyle changes with their primary care doctors. By focusing on early detection and wellness, USFHP helps men take charge of their health and build long-term healthy habits.
