You might believe that as an adult, you no longer need to be concerned about vaccinations. However, it's essential for adults to stay up-to-date with their vaccines.
Numerous adults in the United States require hospitalization due to preventable diseases. By receiving immunizations, you can maintain good health, reduce absenteeism at work, and allow more quality time with loved ones.
While adults may require additional vaccines depending on factors like age, health conditions, occupation, lifestyle, or travel patterns, it is recommended for all to receive the following vaccines:
Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap)
- Protects against tetanus (lockjaw), whooping cough, and diphtheria.
- One dose is given at age 11 or 12 - If not previously vaccinated, get a Tdap shot as soon as possible
- Recommended during each pregnancy (ideally between weeks 27 and 36)
- Should receive booster dose every 10 years
Flu (Influenza)
- Annual flu vaccination is recommended for everyone aged 6 months and older
- The flu can cause serious complications, especially in older adults
COVID-19
- Helps prevent infection, severe illness, and death from COVID-19
Hepatitis B
- Prevents chronic infections, and the risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer
- Recommended for all adults aged 19 to 59
- Adults aged 60 and older with risk factors should get vaccinated
Pneumococcal Vaccine
- Protects against infections like pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections
- Recommended for adults aged 65 and older
- Younger adults at increased risk may also need vaccination
Shingles
- Recommended for healthy adults aged 50 and older
- Administered in two doses
- Shingles can cause severe pain despite not being life-threatening
Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
- Prevents infections and precancers that can lead to cancer
- Recommended for girls and boys aged 11 or 12
- Teens and young adults aged 15 to 26 should receive three doses if starting the series later - Gardasil 9 is approved for ages 9 to 45
